The Perkins County High School Quiz Bowl Team competed at the State Competition in Hastings, Nebraska on April 30th. They qualified by being in the top two at their district competition, as well as the other teams that were there. All class sizes were represented by the thirty teams that attended.
The meet was a double-elimination, bracket style tournament. Perkins County played 3-2. Several of the teams they faced were larger schools from the east side of Nebraska that play in tournaments year round at colleges. However, Perkins County did finish in the Elite Eight and finished in the top 3% of all of Nebraska Quiz Bowl. Their first round was a bye round. In round two, they lost to Beatrice. Then they went on a three round winning streak. They beat McCook in round three. After that, they beat Hastings St Cecilia in round four. In round five they beat North Platte Saint Patricks. Unfortunately, they lost in round six to O’Neill.
The team consists of nine members. Seniors are Ryder Potts, Brock Tines, and Mason McGreer. Juniors are Myles Bishop, Grace LaGrange, and Madi Swesey. Sophomores are Lauren Bishop and Anley Sauder. Freshman is Hanna Colglazier. Six members answered the toss-up questions correctly. Toss-up questions are questions that members answer individually without the help of their teammates. All team members contributed to the bonus question answers where they worked as a team to come up with correct answers and the team captain would give the final answer.
“Thank you to everyone who asked team members about their results throughout the season, put up with team members missing a couple of afternoons for meets these past months and cheered for us during the State walkthrough. PCS staff should be exceptionally proud of our students -- and themselves. Thanks for helping these students learn content / skills that prepared them to go toe-to-toe with some of the best and brightest students in the state,” said Head Coach Deann Bishop.
