Velda Vapenik, 95
Velda Vapenik, 95, of Kearney, formerly of Pleasanton passed away Thursday, June 5, 2025 at Country House Assisted Living in Kearney. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 11, 2025 at Pleasanton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kayla Mangrich officiating. Burial will follow at the Pleasanton Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
Velda was born September 20, 1929 to Isaac and Bessie (Gardner) Pegg in Hayes County, NE. She was raised in Hayes County, NE and later moved to Grand Junction, CO where she finished high school. On September 25, 1949, Velda was united in marriage to George “Dutch” Vapenik in Grand Junction, CO. To this union two daughters were born, Janet and Beverly.
Velda and George raised their family on the family farm in Hayes County, NE. She enjoyed baking and was well known for her cookies and donuts. Velda also loved flowers, watching Nebraska Volleyball and attending her grandchildren’s events.
After retiring from farming, Velda and George purchased a 5th wheel camper and would spend their winters in New Mexico and warmer weather. They loved their years of travel and meeting new people. Their winter days were spent visiting, playing cards, or having coffee with the ladies.
Velda was a member of the Pleasanton United Methodist Church.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Janet (Norman) Metz of Pleasanton, NE, and Beverly (Larry) Siegel of Litchfield, NE; six grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; brother, Don Pegg of Aurora, CO; sisters, Donna Baysinger of Brighton, CO and Belva (Dick) Bamford of Grand Junction, CO; sister-in-law, Annabelle Vapenik of Wauneta, NE; brother-in-law, Dave Olson of Grand Junction, CO; and many nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.
Velda was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George Vapenik; brother, Jack (Dorothy) Pegg; and sister, Margie Olson; brother-in-law Al Baysinger; and sister-in-law, Loretta Pegg.
