The Perkins County Plainsmen took control from the opening kickoff Friday night, September 5, rolling to a decisive 46-16 win over the Sandhills Valley Mavericks. The Plainsmen offense and defense both set the tone early, and by the time the fourth quarter began, Perkins County had already built a commanding 40-point lead.
Perkins County wasted little time getting on the board. Behind a strong offensive push, the Plainsmen established their running game early, marching down the field on their opening drives and finishing them with points. The Mavericks struggled to find an answer for Perkins County’s balanced attack, as the Plainsmen alternated between powerful ground plays and well-timed passes to keep the defense guessing.
By halftime, Perkins County had built a comfortable cushion, capitalizing on both sustained drives and big plays. The defense held just as firm, swarming to the ball and shutting down the Mavericks’ attempts to find any rhythm. Tackling remained crisp and disciplined, preventing Sandhills Valley from breaking free for the type of big gains that could swing momentum.
The second half was much of the same. Perkins County continued to pile on points while keeping Sandhills Valley off the board through three quarters of play. Every time the Mavericks thought they might gain some ground, the Plainsmen defense tightened, forcing turnovers on downs and keeping the momentum firmly in Perkins County’s favor.
It wasn’t until the fourth quarter that Sandhills Valley managed to get on the scoreboard. By then, the Plainsmen were already up 40-0, and even with the Mavericks’ late effort, the outcome was firmly decided. Perkins County responded to the challenge with one more scoring drive of their own, punching in a six-point touchdown in the final quarter to seal the 46-16 victory.
The win was a showcase of Perkins County’s depth and discipline, as contributions came from all over the roster. The offense displayed patience and power, the defense controlled the line of scrimmage, and the special teams set the Plainsmen up with favorable field position throughout the contest.
With the victory, Perkins County demonstrated not only their ability to put points on the board but also their toughness in shutting down an opponent for most of the night.
The Plainsmen will look to carry their momentum into next week when they host the South Loup Bobcats on Friday, September 12. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. in Grant, where Perkins County hopes to build on their strong performance and keep their winning streak alive in front of the home crowd.
