Battle for the Paddles Tournament a success for Perkins County Health Services Foundation

The Perkins County Health Services Foundation hosted its annual pickleball fundraiser on Sunday, Sept. 21, drawing 18 teams and a large crowd of supporters for a day of friendly competition and community fun.

The tournament began at noon with two brackets—eight teams in the beginner division and 10 in the intermediate division. The event opened with pool play before shifting into a single-elimination format.

In the intermediate bracket, Team Great Plains Health, made up of Tom Gottschalk and Tessa Toole, took home the championship title, with Team Jessen—Colette and Loren Jessen—finishing in second place. In the beginner bracket, Team Weber—Amy and Dr. Justin Weber—claimed first, followed by Team Gager, featuring Season and Coy Gager, in second.

Foundation Administrator Lindsay Nodlinski said the day exceeded expectations.

“We had an excellent turnout, and I was thrilled with the support of our community,” Nodlinski said. “Some of the more advanced teams even jumped in to help those with less experience, which was really fun to see.”

To make the day comfortable for participants, organizers set up shaded “pickleballer-only lounges” stocked with snacks and refreshments between games. Four CNA students volunteered alongside Foundation board members to help run the event.

Local food vendors Sprocket Dogs and Prokop’s provided meals throughout the day, and Nodlinski said the weather couldn’t have been better for outdoor play.

“I was impressed with the level of play by every team and heard so many positive comments throughout the day,” she said. “We couldn’t have asked for better weather, and I’m so thankful for everyone who participated and supported the cause.”

Nodlinski added that the Foundation plans to bring the tournament back next year, possibly adding a youth division.

Funds raised during the event will help support the Perkins County Health Services Foundation and local students preparing for the 7th and 8th grade Washington, D.C. trip, which also held a successful fundraiser during the event.
