Understanding homeowner building permits

Are you a homeowner planning to build a new carport, sidewalk, garage, shed, fence or add onto your home? Perhaps you are planning to widen your driveway or sidewalk?

These are a few examples that require a Building Permit. The easiest way to check if your next project needs a Building Permit is to call City Hall at 352-2100.

This summer and fall my husband and I repaired our carport and shed.  Before we started, I called the city and explained our project.  We planned to replace the rotted wood on the carport and shed, replace a few windows in the carport, and to paint.  The North wall of the carport needed to be completely removed and replaced.  The shed needed a new door and the wood on a part of the shed replaced.  We did not plan to/or make the carport or the shed bigger or add to the cement base of either structure.  We hired a contractor to replace the worn-out wood on both buildings to the exact standards as the original structure.  This specific project did NOT require a building permit.

Happily, our contractor did a wonderful job in completing the project and we have a sturdy carport and shed that will last another 20 years! Remember to call before you begin projects around the home to see if you need a Building Permit.  That’s all the boring truth for now…
