The Perkins County Plainsmen boys basketball team came up just short on January 15, falling to the Chase County Longhorns 59–56 in a hard-fought matchup.
Perkins County struggled early with turnovers but continued to battle throughout the first half, eventually tying the game by halftime. The contest remained close in the second half, but a few defensive lapses proved costly down the stretch as Chase County capitalized on easy scoring opportunities.
Colton Kroeker led the Plainsmen offensively, finishing with a team-high 19 points. Rylee Schrotberger and Myles Bishop were strong on the boards, each pulling down eight rebounds to help keep Perkins County competitive inside.
Head Coach Corey Potts credited his team’s effort despite the narrow loss.
“We knew coming into this game that Chase County is very athletic and long, so we were going to have to execute and rely on our fundamentals for a full four quarters,” Potts said. “We got off to a slow start with a few turnovers, but the boys never stopped working and tied it up by halftime. The second half we did not execute on the defensive end of the floor as well and gave up some easy baskets that cost us down the stretch. Those one-score losses are hard to swallow, but I was proud of the boys for how hard they fought.”
The Plainsmen were scheduled to play Wauneta-Palisade on January 16, but that game was postponed due to high winds. A makeup date has not yet been announced.
NEXT ACTION
Perkins County is next scheduled to face Bridgeport on Tuesday, January 20, with results to be published in the next edition of the Grant Tribune-Sentinel. The Plainsmen will then host a tournament at Perkins County High School on Thursday, January 22.
