Perkins County wrestlers compete at state tournament

The Perkins County Plainsmen wrestling team sent four athletes to compete at the Nebraska State Wrestling Tournament this past week in Omaha, gaining valuable experience on the state’s biggest stage.

On the girls side, senior Haley Dunn represented Perkins County at the state meet on February 17–18. Dunn wrestled hard in her matches but was unable to advance after dropping both rounds of competition. As a senior, Dunn concludes her high school wrestling career, closing her time on the mat as a state qualifier for the Plainsmen program.

Three Perkins County boys also qualified for state competition, which took place February 19–21. Carson Green competed in the 132-pound weight class, where he faced tough competition and was eliminated after two matches. Ernesto Perez wrestled in the 215-pound weight class and also dropped both of his bouts.

Leighton Fryzek rounded out the Plainsmen qualifiers, competing at 113 pounds. Fryzek battled through two matches but was unable to secure a win at the state level.

While none of the Plainsmen wrestlers advanced deep into the tournament, the group gained valuable postseason experience, and Perkins County closed out the season with four state qualifiers representing the program in Omaha.
