Lady Plainsmen runner-up at SPVA Meet

The Perkins County track and field teams turned in a strong performance Friday, May 1, at the SPVA Track and Field Meet hosted at Perkins County High School, with the Lady Plainsmen finishing as team runner-up and the Plainsmen posting several personal-best performances.
Head coach Shayne Hite was pleased with his team’s effort as the postseason approaches.
“I thought it was a good day. I felt we competed well,” Hite said. “The girls ended up runner-up, had 16 PRs and one school record, as Madi Potts broke her own 3,200-meter record. The boys competed hard, had 11 PRs, but with our numbers and the level of competition that we faced, they did about as good as we could hope for. Our legs are starting to bounce back, and we hope to be ready to go next week for the district meet.”
On the boys side, Max Latella placed 11th in the 400-meter dash in 57.39 seconds, while Tyson Schwanebeck finished 16th in 1:04.90.
In the 800-meter run, Carson Green placed fifth in 2:09.97, followed by Jesus Marquez in 10th at 2:22.42.
The 1,600-meter run saw Ethan Swesey finish fifth in 5:04.76. Logan Barry was ninth in 5:20.34, just ahead of Leighton Fryzek in 10th at 5:20.89.
Swesey also placed fifth in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:10.02, while Fryzek took seventh in 11:28.49.
Luke Minster placed sixth in the 300-meter hurdles in 43.73 seconds.
The 4x100-meter relay team of Alec Reese, Latella, Spencer Williams and Aaron Ornelas placed seventh in 48.10 seconds.
Perkins County’s 4x400-meter relay team of Green, Latella, Alex Cole and Williams finished fourth in 3:46.16.
The 4x800-meter relay team of Green, Marquez, Barry and Swesey earned second place with a time of 8:42.25.
In the field events, Minster placed 13th in the shot put with a throw of 38 feet, 11.75 inches. Reese followed in 14th at 38-8, and Schwanebeck was 20th at 32-3.5.
In discus, Minster placed sixth with a throw of 127-3. Mason Minster finished ninth at 121-2, while Reese took 10th at 118-11.
Williams placed 15th in the long jump at 16-0.75 and 14th in the triple jump with a leap of 35-9.
For the Lady Plainsmen, Ava Seger placed eighth in the 100-meter dash in 13.87 seconds and also finished eighth in the 200-meter dash in 29.47.
Haylea McGreer placed 10th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:08.23.
In the 800-meter run, McGreer earned fourth place in 2:40.12. Jaymee Harger finished 17th in 3:24.22, and Kinley Bottom was 18th in 3:28.37.
Madison Potts led the distance events, placing second in the 1,600-meter run in 5:42.29. Savannah Miller was seventh in 6:28.91, while Kayleen Jurado placed 16th in 7:17.71.
Potts claimed first place in the 3,200-meter run, breaking her own school record with a time of 12:13.98. Miller added a fifth-place finish in 13:38.70.
In the hurdles, Ella Homan placed second in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.84 seconds, while Macey Cole was sixth in 18.30.
Homan captured first place in the 300-meter hurdles with a winning time of 48.31. Morgan Day placed seventh in 53.73, and Cole was eighth in 54.44.
The 4x100-meter relay team of Alyssa Laber, Seger, Day and Olivia Gengenbach finished sixth in 54.13.
Perkins County’s 4x400-meter relay team of Potts, Seger, Laber and Homan placed second in 4:29.33.
In the shot put, Jacqueline Gloy finished seventh with a throw of 32-9.25. Paige Franklin placed 17th at 28-0, and Ryleigh Johnson was 18th at 27-10.75.
Johnson led the Lady Plainsmen in discus, placing 15th with a throw of 88-3. Franklin was 16th at 85-1, and Gloy placed 20th at 81-5.
Cole placed fifth in the high jump, clearing 4-9.
In pole vault, Gengenbach finished seventh at 7-2, while McGreer placed 12th at the same height.
Lauren Bishop took third in the long jump with a leap of 15-6. Homan was seventh at 14-2.5, and Anley Sauder placed ninth at 14-0.25.
Bishop also earned second in the triple jump with a mark of 33-7.75. Sauder added an eighth-place finish at 30-11.75, while Kinley Richmond was 15th at 27-6.
NEXT ACTION
Perkins County will next compete Thursday, May 7, at the Paxton Last Chance Meet at Sutherland Public Schools. The first event is scheduled to begin at noon.
