
Area students to selected to attend Cornhusker Girls State
Four Perkins County High School Junior girls have been selected to attend Cornhusker Girls State at the University of Nebraska Lincoln, City Campus from May 31-June 6, 2026.
These young women learn how government works by actively running a mock government. Participants are assigned to mock counties and cities and are assigned either the “Federalist Party” or “Nationalist Party”. Then elections are held for all levels of state government. This program, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, has existed for 100 years and is dedicated to developing values of good citizenship, civic responsibility, leadership skills and an appreciation for their rights as citizens, interspersed with times for fun and forming new friendships.
Selected to represent the Venango American Legion Auxiliary are Lauren Bishop and Anley Sauder.
Lauren is the daughter of Jayson and Deanne Bishop. She is a member of the Volleyball, Basketball, and Track teams and is involved in Student Council, FFA, FCA, Quiz Bowl, One Acts, and NHS.
The daughter of Chase and Melissa Sauder, Anley is active in Volleyball, Basketball, Track, FFA, FCA, Quiz Bowl, One Acts, TeamMates, 4-H, and Student Council.
Representing the Grant American Legion Auxiliary is Emily Wilson, daughter of Derek and Melissa Wilson. Emily is involved in Volleyball, Basketball, Cheer, Speech, One Acts, NHS, FFA, and Student Council. She also works at Scooters.
Shyne Hickey, daughter of Sharla and Carlos Hickey, will represent the Madrid American Legion Auxiliary. Shyne participates in FFA, Speech, Student Council, One Acts, NHS, Farm to School Committee, 4-H, and Cheer.
