Lady Plainsmen, boys relay team punch tickets to state at C-9 District Meet

The Lady Plainsmen qualified four individual athletes in five events, while the Plainsmen boys advanced the 3,200-meter relay team to Omaha after earning a wildcard berth with a third-place finish.

Junior Madison Potts led Perkins County with two state qualifications in the distance events. Potts placed second in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:49.20 before winning the district championship in the 3,200 meters in 12:24.85.

Ella Homan also secured a state berth for the Lady Plainsmen after finishing runner-up in the 300-meter hurdles in 48.35 seconds. Lauren Bishop qualified in the triple jump with a leap of 33 feet, 6.25 inches, while freshman Macey Cole cleared 4 feet, 11 inches in the high jump to advance to Omaha.

Perkins County’s boys 3,200-meter relay team of Carson Green, Logan Barry, Ethan Swesey and Jesus Marquez also advanced to state competition. The quartet finished third in a personal-record time of 8:34.15, qualifying on time among the state’s wildcard entries.

Several Perkins County athletes posted personal-best performances during the district meet. Carson Green ran a personal-record 2:09.56 in the boys 800 meters, while Tyson Schwanebeck recorded a PR in the 400 meters. The Plainsmen boys 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams also turned in season-best performances.

On the girls side, Perkins County saw multiple athletes improve their marks heading into the postseason. Morgan Day posted a personal-best time in the 300 hurdles, while Alyssa Laber and Zoe Hansen each recorded PR performances in their respective events. The Lady Plainsmen 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams also achieved season-best marks.

Perkins County’s girls finished fourth in the team standings with 54 points, while the boys placed 10th with 12 points in a district field featuring several top western Nebraska programs.

The NSAA State Track and Field Championships will be held Friday, May 22, and Saturday, May 23, at Omaha Burke Stadium.
