Persistent rainfall has left standing water surrounding portions of the Perkins County Fairgrounds and adjacent ballfields on Grant’s southwest edge. According to reports, Perkins County received 2.13 inches of rain during the first six days of July, following 5.84 inches in June. While the moisture has been welcomed by area farmers, it has also created drainage challenges throughout the county. With fair events scheduled to begin Friday, the Perkins County Fair Board brought its concerns to county commissioners Monday morning. As a temporary solution, commissioners approved digging a drainage basin west of the ballfields and installing a culvert to allow overflow from the existing ditch to drain into it. Fair Board members and commissioners agreed the long-standing drainage issue will require a permanent solution.

Fair warning: It’s wet out there: too much of a good thing threatens plans
