Three-vehicle crash spills grain, closes Highway 23 outside Grant

A three-vehicle crash east of Grant spilled a load of distillers grain across Highway 23 and temporarily stopped traffic Monday morning. No human injuries were reported.
The Perkins County Sheriff’s Office responded to the crash near the asphalt batch plant at about 8:30 a.m. Aug. 24.
According to the sheriff’s office, a westbound semitrailer was stopped while waiting to turn into the plant. A pickup pulling a stock trailer had stopped behind it.
A second westbound semitrailer hauling distillers grain was unable to stop and struck the rear of the stock trailer. The collision caused the trailer’s gooseneck hitch to separate from the pickup, although its safety chains remained connected. The pickup was then pushed into the rear of the first semitrailer.
The crash damaged the pickup’s cab and caused a significant amount of grain to spill across the highway, resulting in a temporary traffic stoppage.
One horse was inside the stock trailer at the time of the collision and was transported to Perkins County Veterinary Hospital to be evaluated for injuries and stress.
Perkins County Emergency Management and the county’s 911 Communications Center assisted at the scene, along with Grant Fire and Rescue, Madrid Fire and Rescue and the Nebraska Department of Transportation.
NDOT crews used power brooms to clear the spilled grain, while Grant firefighters assisted with water hoses.
