Donna Eileen Powell Saum Brodbeck, 89 of Grant, Nebraska, passed away Feb. 11, 2019, at the Golden Ours Convalescent Home in Grant.

Donna was born Dec. 20, 1929, to Carl and Alice (Walrod) Powell at Grant. She was the youngest of four children. Donna attended Grant Grade School and Perkins County High School, graduating with the class of 1947. 

After graduation, she worked for Consumers Public Power District. She was married to Harry Saum on Jan. 21, 1951. To this union, a daughter, Pamela was born in 1954. 

Donna married Robert W. Brodbeck on Dec. 10, 2000, in Grand Island, and the couple made their home in Grant.

Donna was an active member of the First Congregational Church since 1941 when she was confirmed. She sang in the choir for over 45 years, until throat surgery forced her to quit in 1989. Over the years she served as a Sunday School teacher, Deaconess, trustee, president of church council, moderator, secretary, and also president of the women’s fellowship.

Donna was a member of Chapter FU P.E.O. and had held all of the offices. She was a member of the Perkins Chapter No. 294, Order of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron in 1978; she held several other offices and was treasurer for 15 years. Donna continued her membership when the chapter joined with Ogallala Chapter No. 142.

Donna started giving private piano lessons in her home in 1958; and taught well over 120 students over the years. She worked part-time for Charlotte Vlasin and later, Donice Holaway, at the Perkins County Treasurer’s office.

Donna was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; parents; and brothers, Sterling, Keith and Everett.

Survivors include her daughter, Pamela (Randy) Koch of Cozad; three grandchildren, Jeremy (Bailey) Koch, Jennifer (Jim) Louthan, and Jacqui (Austin) Hendrickson; two grandsons, Hudson and Asher Koch; stepson, Chris Brodbeck; stepdaughter-in-law, Teri Brodbeck; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A memorial has been established in Donna’s memory for later designation. Condolences may be shared at bullocklongfuneralhome.com.

Services were held Thursday, Feb. 14, 2019 at the First Congregational Church in Grant with Denise Johnson officiating. 

Bullock-Long Funeral Home of Grant is in charge of arrangements.
