Doris Anna Marie McClenahan, 100, of Grant, Nebraska, passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at the Golden Ours Convalescent Home in Grant.

Doris was born Dec. 31, 1916 in Omaha to Ernest and Mary (Schimonitz) White. She grew up in Omaha where she attended Catholic school, and later, Omaha South High School.

Following her education, Doris worked cleaning houses and babysitting.

On Aug. 18, 1934, Doris was united in marriage to Fred McClenahan at Papillion, Neb. The couple lived in a great many places while they followed Fred’s career in the grain industry, before moving to Grant in 1955. Their union was blessed with five children, Fred, Garvin, Mike, Mary Kay and Kathy.

In 1966, the family moved to Omaha, but returned to the area 10 years later when they moved to Madrid upon retirement. Fred passed away in 1983, and a couple years later, Doris moved to Grant. Most recently, Doris had made her home at the Golden Ours Convalescent Home, where she befriended much of the staff, and received wonderful care.

Doris was seemingly a domestic wonder, as she was gifted in cooking, baking, sewing, crocheting and crafting. In fact, Doris’ cherry pie made such an impression on Fred, that he was convinced he’d found his future bride upon trying a piece. Doris herself had a sweet tooth, and was known by her family and friends to always want to eat her dessert first.

As a mother, she was selfless, peaceful, joyful and kind. She was an avid reader, and enjoyed spending time out in her garden. Doris witnessed many things in her 100 years of life, but always appreciated the simple things, like sitting down to watch Jeopardy or Johnny Carson.

Doris was a woman of faith. She was a longtime member of Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church, where she was active in the Altar Society. She was also involved in Bridge and extension clubs.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Fred in 1983; along with her siblings, Laurene White, Kenny White and Ernest “Dewey” White.

Survivors include her children: Fred (Jean) McClenahan of Omaha, Garvin (Connie) McClenahan of Grant, Mike “Mick” (Sue) McClenahan of Omaha, Mary Kay McClenahan of Grant, Kathy (Mark) Paris of Ft. Collins, Colo; 12 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; 13 great-great grandchildren; along with many other relatives and friends.

A memorial has been established in her memory for later designation by the family. Condolences may be shared at bullocklongfuneralhome.com.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, July 14, 2017 at Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church in Grant with Father Thomas Bush as Celebrant. Burial followed in the Grant Fairview Cemetery.
