John Granville Sexson, age 74, of Hershey, Nebraska, passed away Tuesday, November 16, 2021, at his daughter’s home outside of Adams, Nebraska.

John was born May 17, 1947, in Grant to John E. and Ardith (Norman) Sexson, the second of four children.  He graduated from Grant High School in May 1965.

On August 23, 1969, John married Barbara E. Erickson and they were later blessed with three children, Julie, Lori and John T. The couple made their home in Chadron so John could attend his junior year of college.  In April 1970, John was drafted into the United States Army.  He spent 3 years in the service and was able to see several countries around the world.

After his discharge, they moved to Lincoln where John worked in the post office and Barb ran an in-home daycare.

In 1984, the family moved back to Chadron in order for John to finish college and graduate with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education.

His first teaching job was in Alliance where he taught high school science.  In the summer of 1988, another move took the family to Hershey where John taught high school science at Hershey Public Schools.

In May 2008, he retired from teaching.

John loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He would get so excited from the news of new grandchildren and great-grandchildren!  His favorite times were playing cards, 5-point pitch was always his choice.

Teaching new card games to his grandchildren was his specialty.

But once they knew how to play, he would joke about never winning another game.

John was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara; his parents, John E. and Ardith Sexson; and father-in-law, Kenneth Erickson.

Survivors include his children, Julie (Scott) Hudson of Adams, Lori Weir of Kearney and John (Rebeka) Sexson of Hershey; grandchildren, Hunter, Harrison and Hollynn Hudson of Adams, Jacob (Tanisha) Weir of North Platte, Justin (Rebecca) Weir of Kearney and Carly, Jarrett and Claire Sexson of Hershey; great-grandson, Jesiah Weir of North Platte; siblings, Mike (Eunice) Sexson of Lincoln, Jim (Renae) Sexson of North Platte and Cathy (Tom) Willhite of Grant; his mother-in-law, Bonnie Erickson, of North Platte; and other family.

Services were held at 1 p.m. CT on Saturday, November 20, 2021, at Odean Colonial Chapel. Burial followed at 2 p.m. MT in the Fairview Cemetery at Grant.

Visitation is Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. with family greeting friends from 4-6 p.m. at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore, which is in charge of arrangements.
