John Schmidt

John H. Schmidt, 73, of Wallace, Nebraska, passed away Oct. 17, 2017, at his home in Wallace.

John was born Aug. 29, 1942, in Farmville, Virgina, to Albert and Florence (Harmolin) Schmidt. He graduated from Collinwood High School in Cleveland, Ohio in 1960.

Following his education, John entered the U.S. Army, where he served cumulatively for over 20 years including a tour in Vietnam. 

In July of 1974, John married Dixie Lee. Following Dixie’s passing in 1989, John eventually moved to North Platte, Neb. Most recently John had been making his home in Wallace, where he greatly enjoyed small-town life.

John was a private man and mostly kept to himself, which was one of the reasons he enjoyed life in a small community. He loved fishing, hunting, learning about history and was very proud of his military service. 

John also enjoyed classical musicals and his family often heard him singing around the house and to his family. John also liked ballroom and salsa dancing as well as horseback riding.

John was preceded in death by his parents; two spouses; an infant son, Daniel; and a sister.

John is survived by his daughter, Laura (Jeffery) Habisch of Killeen, Texas; his son Mark Schmidt of Flint, Michigan; three grandchildren, Daniel John, Arianna Irene, and Phillip; as well as his Wallace friends.

Graveside services with military honors were held on Monday, Oct. 23, 2017, at Morning View Cemetery. 

Bullock-Long Funeral Home of Grant was in charge of arrangements.
