Friday nights meant for high school sports

First of all, I want to make a comment about Big 10 football games or any other college teams playing their games on Friday night. I realize it is all about money and the TV networks that are putting big-time dollars into televising games. I understand that, but leave Friday nights to the high school teams across the United States. I now am off my soap box.

I truly do feel like Friday night should be for high school activities, but I also realize that I need to check starting times more closely because I missed three-quarters of the PC and Maxwell football game and I would have liked to see more of it. I don’t know how the game went in the first three quarters but I know that PC ended up winning a close game and that was good.

Got a big game coming up this week and I wish them all the success in the world and hope they get another win.

Also congratulations to Jacqueline Gloy on qualifying for the Girl’s State Golf.

Also congratulations to Mason Greer for his first place in SPVA XC and to Meredith Gloy for her fourth place in the girls SPVA XC.

Busy time in high school athletics as all the playoffs etc. are beginning and State Contests are being played. An exciting time for sure.

Back to Friday night football. Yes, the Huskers traveled to Rutgers and won a football game on the road and one that was again a close-scoring game. It was not a game that would be listed under the heading well played. But what did get listed as was a W for the Huskers. It did end a string of close losses that Nebraska has had but there are still so many things that have to be improved if more W’s are going to go on the Husker’s record.

It was a game of really bad for the Huskers in the first half and then much better but not really good for the Huskers in the second half either. Remember it still was a win. Even after going scoreless in the first half, the game was not out of hand and the second half got enough offense and defense to win a 14-13 game. The defense played better in the second half and the offense was good enough to win. The defense picked off some passes at great times and the offense responded also.

Sometimes I don’t understand what the reasons are on offense when the ball is inside the two and you take a long snap instead of having the QB under center but the one time we tried the OB under center we fumbled and maybe that is a factor in the decision-making.

Some of the things the win did were positive. First time in four years that the Huskers have won back-to-back Big 10 games. It ran the wins over Rutgers to 6-0. It also was a game where the Husker’s penalties were only half as many as in the last game. Some positive things for sure.

One thing that bothered me was the fact that some of the Huskers team decided to go celebrate the win by going to the Rutgers end of the field and do a little dance on the Rutgers’ mascot and do some trash talking to the Rutgers fans that were still there. I hope the coaches put a stop to that stuff. Act like you have been there before even if it has been a long time.

Even though the Husker game wasn’t always pretty to watch, it beat the heck out of watching the Denver Broncos on Thursday. I don’t even remember who they were playing but it was the worst game I think I have ever watched at the pro level and the Broncos lost. Almost all parts of the game on both sides were less than professional in execution.
