Grant deserves more than a scripted performance

Dear Editor,

Following my previous letter, I’ve received a range of responses—some supportive, others critical. That’s to be expected in any honest civic dialogue. But to be clear, this discussion is not about settling old scores or carrying on someone else’s tradition. The challenges Grant is facing are far more real than anything playing in a theater nearby.

Public service is not a stage, and leadership is not a role to be performed. It’s a responsibility—grounded in transparency, humility, and public trust. When citizens step forward to ask questions, raise concerns, or advocate for accountability, they are not disrupting the process—they are participating in it.

Too often, those efforts are met not with engagement, but with silence or defensiveness. That is not leadership. That is avoidance. And it undermines the very foundation of our community’s confidence in its institutions.

When commitments made by those in Office become empty formalities, it’s not just their credibility that falters, it’s the community’s trust in the system itself. This town deserves more than a minimum effort and surface-level compliance. It deserves leadership that acts with integrity, even when no one is watching—and especially when everyone is.

Let me be clear: this is not about the past. It is about the direction we choose now. Will we continue tolerating mediocrity cloaked in tradition, or will we demand the kind of accountability that builds a better future?

To those who are already asking the tough questions—thank you. To those unsure of where to stand—it’s time to get involved. And to those entrusted with the public’s confidence—I urge you to meet that trust with honesty, not performance.

Grant is worth the effort. Let’s not reduce it to a script. Let’s write something real—together.

Sincerely,

Marlin Wendell
