Let’s be honest about what “progress” really means

Dear Editor,

“Progress.” It’s a word the City Council uses often—but rarely defines. At its core, progress means to move forward. And when that direction benefits our community and reflects our values, it’s something we can all support.

But labeling this third-party nuisance enforcement program as “progress” misses the mark.

Progress isn’t paperwork. It’s not third-party contractors driving around with cameras, citing residents for a lawn mower in the yard or bricks set aside for a project. It’s not enforcing uniformity through arbitrary decisions made without context or conversation.

This program feels less like a partnership and more like control. And when the City Council avoids questions about property selection, nuisance definitions, and spending—residents are right to ask: who is this really for?

Let’s use common sense. A mower or a few bricks doesn’t equal neglect. These are signs of real people maintaining real properties. If that’s considered “blight,” we’ve lost sight of what matters in a rural town.

There’s room for progress—but only if it’s fair, transparent, and rooted in local values. Otherwise, it’s just another expensive program serving bureaucracy, not the people.

Let’s move forward—but let’s do it the right way. With integrity. With input. With our community in mind.

Sincerely,

Marlin Wendell
