Pitchin with Pritch: Could the heat be rising for Frost?

With this year’s sports seasons coming to an end soon, what does it look like for the coming year in some of the college and high school sports seasons?

Some pretty interesting items have been released and thoughts from various people connected with the University of Nebraska popped up in the last few days.

Believe it or not, but a lot of people are interested in Nebraska football—especially those who can remember when the Huskers were winning a lot of games each year and going to bowl games and all that kind of fun things.

It seems like that was a long time ago. So if you are the current head football coach at Nebraska and the athletic director says he thinks nine wins this year is possible, do you start to feel the heat rising?

I think if your AD says something like that and your current record at Nebraska is 11-20, there would be more than just a little heat.

Then you look at the schedule and in the background you hear the AD say something like “the schedule is tougher this year than other years,” a couple more degrees of heat might be felt.

Bill Moos, Nebraska’s AD, later said that he thought that there were eight or nine wins on the schedule.

“We’ve got to bring our best game every Saturday and protect our home field. I wouldn’t doubt that it’s the toughest schedule in college, but we’re four years into the Scott Frost era.

“We’ve got good players, we’ve got fabulous coaches and we’ve got depth and speed and talent. You’re always fearful of injuries, and the ball’s got to bounce right a time or two, and we’ve got to win the close ones, but I think we’re capable of it.”

Currently the Huskers have seven home games—Buffalo, Northwestern, Michigan, Purdue, Ohio State, Southeastern Louisiana, and Iowa—and Illinois, Oklahoma, Michigan State, Minnesota, and Wisconsin on the road.

Coach Frost’s record at home has not been good, as he is 8-9 since 2018. In those losses are losses to teams such as Troy, Illinois and Minnesota. I hope Bill Moos is correct! It would be nice to see nine wins again and I would bet Frost wouldn’t get fired for winning nine games for a few years more.

The other article that caught my attention was the fact that the girls and boys high school basketball tournament would be played during the same week next season.

In 2022, both will be played during the week of March 7-12.

Next year Pinnacle Bank Arena will not be available during the first weekend of March because the Big 10 wrestling championships will be held at that time.

The girls championship games will take place Friday, March 11 and the boys championship games are set for the following day.  NET will broadcast all 12 championship games. The NSAA stated that the full schedule for the 2022 girls and boys postseason tournament and state championship events will be released at a later date.
