Pitchin with Pritch: Lots of Husker action this week

Article Image Alt Text

This past week was a busy one in the State of Nebraska in a lot of ways with and athletic contests right in the middle of things.

At NU, the volleyball, football and men’s and women’s basketball teams all had contests.

I watch Nebraska volleyball most of the time when it is on TV. I get especially interested when they play Penn State.

Part of it is I like to watch the Penn State coach, Russ Rose. First of all, he is a great coach. His record proves that but to me, and I am judging here, he has the personality of a rock.

The one thing you can count on is that the contest will be a tough one for whoever Penn State is playing.

Even Nebraska has to play really well to come out on top, so that makes the contest very interesting to watch.

This match was pretty good but I also thought that it made a statement that Nebraska could be very, very good in big matches.

The first set was a surprise because the Husker ladies won it 25-14.

Then in the second set, things turned around and at one time the Huskers found themselves on the small end of a 22-15 score.

At that point, I thought that this one would at least go four sets.

Then the Huskers did something that I didn’t think they could do—they won eight of the next nine points.

With the score 23-23, the Huskers finished their run and won 25-23.

I thought maybe that would completely demoralize Penn State but whatever Coach Rose said worked and even though the Huskers won the third set 25-23, it was a great match to watch.

I did not think that this would happen as tough as the Big 10 volleyball is this year. Great match to watch and I enjoyed it.

From volleyball to football

Then there was the Husker football team playing at Wisconsin.

Marlene and I had been to watch our grandson Kyler play a couple of basketball games on Saturday morning.

I got back after kickoff and was happy that the score was 7-7.

The game turned out like most of the Husker games this year.

We played pretty well and ran up some outstanding numbers on offense, but Wisconsin runs the opening kickoff back, the defense lets a long run from scrimmage go for a touchdown.

Then the Husker QB throws a couple of interceptions that hurt. Same song, different verse and the Huskers are close again but lose.

Plainsmen still my favorite

My favorite team just behind the Plainsmen is our grandson Kyler’s basketball team.

We got to watch two games on Saturday morning and they were played back to back which is pretty tough on 4th and 5th graders.

Ky’s bunch won both games but at the end of the second game, I am pretty sure that they were all hungry and a little tired.

Another good thing about these games is that I get to run into a number of former Grant people.

It was bonus week Saturday as we got to visit with Ryan Terwilliger and Greg and Denice Aten, then run into Chad Millerat the Husker game.

Still getting used to the big city but it is getting a little easier to get around.

Still miss PC.
