Pitchin with Pritch: Shout-out to the Plainsmen

Congratulations to the Plainsmen football team on their win over Bertrand last week and good luck to the coaches and players as they are on the road again to play at Arapahoe.

Normally the games get tougher as you advance and the Plainsmen will meet an undefeated team in Arapahoe.

All that matters is to make sure you have more points at the end than the opponent and you keep on advancing.

I got to watch the Bertrand game on Striv and the Plainsmen played well. It is a team game no matter who scores, etc. and there were some outstanding individual efforts as well as lots of team efforts.

I have to mention Triston Hite and his 72 yard run for a touchdown.

There were good blocks on that run, and then the open field and a sprint to score.

I know that had to take a little wind out of the Bertrand team.

Eight-man football has some high scoring games, so even if you get the big play, you have to keep it up in order to insure a win. PCS did just that.

I thought that the Plainsmen defense did a good job also.

All in all, it was a great start to the playoffs and hopefully the Plainsmen will get the job done on Friday.

The SPVA still has two teams in the playoffs with PCS being joined by Sutherland. Dundy County Stratton is also still in the D1 playoffs.

Huskers back in action

The Husker football team had a bye week and that was a blessing,I hope. Maybe they can regroup a little bit and now get ready to play the toughest part of their season.

When you are 3-5 and facing the toughest part of the schedule, a bye week might not help all that much, looking at the rest of the schedule.

The Huskers play Purdue at Lincoln this week, Ohio State at Lincoln, then Wisconsin on the road, and finish up with Iowa back in Lincoln.

I don’t think there is a sure-win anywhere in that group.

The Huskers are going to have to pick up the pace and play with the big boys in the Big Ten if they plan on winning anymore games this season.

Husker basketball

The Nebraska men’s basketball team will play this week, actually the day the Tribune comes out, Wednesday night. They are playing an exhibition game with Peru State.

Coach Hoiberg has brought in a number of new players and he had success at Iowa State doing that same thing.

One of the writers for the Lincoln paper suggested that “Out of respect for Hoiberg, it’s time to attach serious expectations to his Nebraska program.”

The Huskers have not been a serious contender through the years.

When Coach Joe Cipriano was at Nebraska in the 70s, there was some success, but not at the NCAA level. The Huskers haven’t been to the NCAA tournament very often and they have NEVER won a game in the tournament. Hoiberg is now in his third year and is 5-34 in the Big Ten in his two seasons at NU, and there is not much of a mention of him being on the Hot Seat. The Pinnacle Bank Arena is normally almost full of fans at the home games.

The Big Ten has good football for sure, but basketball is pretty darn good too.

Again, I hope that the Husker Men’s basketball program can at least be a contender and make the NCAA tournament or at least the NIT.

I did get started on basketball games last weekend as our grandson Kyler and the team he plays on traveled to Omaha for some games.

We went to the Friday night games and they won two games.

On Saturday,  they lost but won on Sunday to finish up in second place in the tournament.

The team he plays on are fourth graders and they played in a tournament with mostly fifth graders so they had a pretty good tournament.

Sunday you would have almost needed a water craft of some kind because it did rain a bunch.

Probably won’t say much in the future about my grandson, but I am a pretty proud Grandpa because the kid plays really good defense for a fourth grader and that makes me very proud.
