Plainsmen fan thanks girls and coaches for determination

Letter to the Editor

I would like to thank the senior girls for their efforts on the basketball court the last four years. Although the win-loss record hasn’t represented a real successful run, your determination to stick it out in good and bad times showed us all your true character.

It’s easy to do something that comes easy, it is much harder to stay with something that is hard. I hope that is the lesson you will take with you as you head out in the world to pursue your dreams.

You probably already know this, but the deck has been stacked against you in sports with unprecedented low girl enrollment numbers, especially in the last couple years.  In reality, we were a D2 school playing a C2 schedule with several C1 schools mixed in.

If the NSAA would have implemented a class system based on girl numbers only, your careers may have been very different. It appears for you younger girls this might be the case going forward.

I would also like to thank the coaches for their efforts. Your dedication never wavered from the time we first tipped off till the very end.

I saw Coach Steffen still teaching and instructing seniors in the last game when the outcome was already obvious. You will go far in your new position with that character and love of teaching, Coach. These girls are better people due to your efforts. Thanks again.

To the parents of younger girls in our system. If you want your children to have success on the courts and fields of PCS, you need to push them to better themselves. Get them to the gym. Take them to the weight room and spend time nurturing and developing their talents. I know there are several of us parents who wish we’d done more. Don’t have that regret.

High school sports are a wonderful thing and teach so many life lessons. I know I’m a better person for participating, even if I didn’t win any scholarships or have any chances to play at the next level.

I think often of the lessons my coaches and teachers taught me. Coaches aren’t right all the time, but that lesson is just as important as the many, and the majority of times, they are doing the right thing.

Please give your children the opportunity and the tools to compete. You won’t regret it.
