From the Pulpit: I want your junk

Back in Texas, the local radio station had a morning call-in show called “Tradio.” It was regularly on in my office. Among the many unique requests, there was one that still sticks out in my mind. It’s a guy who would call in daily. He’d call and announce, “I want your junk” and then give his number.

Merriam-Webster defines junk as things that are worn, second hand, something of poor quality, or something of little meaning, worth and or significance. The caller wants what he knows that we all have. God wants what he knows we all have, but for whatever reason, we won’t let our junk go.

Do you have junk? Do you have sin that’s piled up around you, or in your heart? Has it become such a burden that you have no idea how to clean it up? It usually costs something to get rid of it.

“If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:8-9). God doesn’t make junk, but He does want your junk. No payment required. It’s already been purchased. It was paid by one who came, bore and buried our junk, with His life, death and resurrection.

Every change in season we find ourselves at our home sorting through junk. It’s amazing how much we can amass in such a short time. Isaiah tells us that all things of this life on earth will perish, but the Word of the Lord is forever (Is. 40:6-8). Even the wrappings and trappings of our favorite holidays will perish, but the hope and promise we receive is eternal life.

May the peace of God which surpasses all our junk, keep your heart and mind in the knowledge of God’s priceless gift, Christ Jesus.
