TeamMates mentors needed

Letter to the Editor

If you could spend just 30 minutes a week on an event that could possibly have a lifetime effect on a young person’s life, would you do it? I would think the answer to that question would be a pretty simple, “Yes.” If that sounds interesting to you, there is an organization and place where you could accomplish that feat.

The Perkins County Schools TeamMates Chapter is looking for adults to be mentors for the next school year. Our chapter was formed two years ago and this year we have 29 students, grades sixth through eighth participating.

Next year, 14 students have indicated they want to join the program, so we are going to need at least 14 more mentors. There is a good chance even more students will want to participate. This class has a number of boys in it, so we will need more men to participate as mentors.

My biggest fear is that we will have to tell a student that we cannot find enough mentors so that student will not be able to participate in the TeamMates program. I think it is safe to say that if you talk to any of the mentors now in the program, they will tell you that the 30 minutes they spend with their mentee is worth it and I am sure that most of the mentors will tell you that they get as much out of the program as the mentee.

There is an application form to fill out and there is a background check done, so it does take a little time and that is one of the reasons we would like to have that part of being a mentor done before school starts next fall.

If you think you would like to be a mentor, please contact me. I have an office at the middle school/high school building and I am there most every day from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The school number is 308-352-4735.

Please consider being a mentor. It is a great program that helps kids.
