What an exciting season for the Perkins County boys varsity basketball team! Our community is so proud of their hard work and how far they have come as a team this season.

Each week, the Tribune publishes stories and photos of their accomplishments. As well as other PC teams!

But being a journalist is hard. Balancing between being a fan and a journalist is even harder.

As journalists it is our responsibility to provide unbiased news to our readers...the good, the bad and the ugly.

What’s even harder as journalists is the rules we must abide by as set forth by the NSAA regarding sports coverage.

As journalists we are provided with press passes that allow us game entry and to be down on the court to take photos.

What does this mean? As NSAA representatives we are not allowed to wear our team’s logos like other proud fans. We are not allowed to cheer for our teams. We are not allowed to stand and chant along with the crowd when our team’s cheerleaders ask us to.

We want to cheer along and share the excitement with our fellow fans! We want to stand and shout when our team makes a great shot! It’s even harder when we feel the eyes of other fans on us, wondering why we aren’t participating. The truth is, it’s because we can’t.

However, last week’s sub-district game against Sutherland was different. Last week, our staff went to the game, put our press passes away, paid at the door and proudly cheered for our team. And we LOVED it!

It’s not something we can do regularly, but last week’s game was totally worth it and we had a great time!

So next time you see one of our staff members sitting during a time-out chant, not clapping and cheering after a great play, or even looking as if we don’t care, please know that we DO CARE and we LOVE these teams! We are simply obligated by the NSAA code of conduct and take it seriously as a newspaper and a staff.

But never fear Plainsmen, we are behind you. We are proud of you. And we are screaming and cheering on the inside!

GO PLAINSMEN!!!
