Mock Trial teams finish season at regional tournament

The Perkins County mock trial teams completed the season with final performances at the regional tournament held at Broken Bow on Nov. 14.

This year’s mock trial involved social media where a video was sent to the plaintiff, Jessie Kimball by the defendant, Bentley Vanderfeller.

Kimball claims the video, containing strobing lights, was intentionally sent and caused her to experience a seizure as she suffers from epilepsy. This resulted in Kimball losing her scholarship along with incurring numerous medical expenses.

Vanderfeller does not deny sending the video but claims it was sent accidently. He did not intend for Kimball to be injured by the video which was taken from a concert.

In the first round, the black team as defendant eliminated Dundy Co No. 2 in convincing fashion. All three witnesses, Chris, Karen, and Bryce, were commended on their performances. This was arguably the most complete performance by the team up to this point.

Later in the first round, the red team as defendant lost to a seasoned Southern Valley team, ending their season. The judges indicated the scores were close but the combined experience of Southern Valley was too much to overcome.

In the semifinal round, the black team as plaintiff squared off against Southern Valley. At the end of a back and forth battle, the final scores were separated by one point with Perkins County coming up short. The judges shared that Perkins County had lost points in the cross examination.

The disappointment of the season coming to an end was clearly seen on each member of the team, especially the seniors.

The team appreciated the efforts of Rick Roberts and Tanya McArtor for serving as attorney coaches throughout the season.

Season records: red team 1-2; black team 3-1.
