PC FFA competes at Leadership Development Events

On Tuesday, Dec. 4, Perkins County FFA members traveled to North Platte to compete in Leadership Development Events. They competed in ag demo, creed speaking and natural resources speaking. The junior high also competed in ag quiz bowl.

In ag demo, Kayton Brueggeman and Kylie Tucker demonstrated water infiltration properties of native grassland soils, no-till soils and conventionally tilled soils.

In creed speaking, first-year FFA members recite the FFA creed and answer questions about what the creed means to them. For Alyssa Malmkar, creed speaking was a good experience, and very interesting.

“I liked learning about what FFA believes in and stands for,” she commented. “The creed is not an easy thing to compete in. It takes a lot of work and studying, but it is worth it in the end.”

Hallie Fischer and Hayden Foster competed in creed speaking as well.

In natural resources speaking, members give speeches on any topic that relates to natural resources and answer questions about their topics. Samuel McArtor gave a speech on endangered species.

For McArtor, the most challenging thing was answering the questions the judges must ask him. However, this caused him to learn a lot about his topic. “I learned a lot about endangered species and the ecosystem upon which they depend. I learned a lot about the Endangered Species Act and the different amendments and regulations it has,” he said.

Results

Natural resources speaking—Samuel McArtor: purple ribbon, first place state qualifier.

Creed speaking—Alyssa Malmkar: purple ribbon, fifth place; Hallie Fisher: blue ribbon; Hayden Foster: white ribbon.

Ag demo—Kayton Brueggeman and Kylie Tucker: blue ribbon.

Junior high quiz bowl

All four teams won at least one round in the competition.

The PC No. 1 team of Will Long, Storm Peterson, Kaylee Dilsaver and Eli Busick were district runners-up.

They battled all other teams after a loss to Gothenburg No. 1, then forced a third-round playoff by defeating Gothenburg No. 1 and then lost to them in the final match.
