PC students attend FCCLA leadership conference

Eleven members from Perkins County High School FCCLA, Advisor Cathy Ochsner, Parent Sponsor DeAnna Schulze and Paraeducator Jeff Craig attended District 11 Leadership Conference in McCook on Wednesday, Oct. 25. 

The conference was held on the McCook campus of Mid Plains Community College in McCook.

District 11 FCCLA Conference includes members from Chase County, Dundy County Stratton, Perkins County, Medicine Valley, Cambridge, Elwood and Arapahoe.

The theme for the 2017 conference was “FCCLA…Stepping Out of the Box.”  

The meeting was lead by District 11 FCCLA Vice President Kadie Hanson from Perkins County.

 Attendees were greeted by MCC Representative and Grant native, Andy Long.  Nebraska FCCLA State President Mia Kegley from the Kearney FCCLA Chapter brought greetings and updates from the FCCLA State Officer team. 

Also in attendance were State Vice President of Development Haylee Evans and State PEER Career Leader Team Vice Chairperson Sabra Schmidt. 

Haylee and Sabra are members of the Medicine Valley chapter. 

The main session for the morning was presented by Kaiti Dingers.  

She represented Jana’s Campaign and shared information on “Teen Gender Violence Prevention”.

Many of the District 11 FCCLA members attending the conference took part in a service project to support the McCook Domestic Abuse and Sexual Assault Services (DASAS). 

Members brought items that could be used at DASAS.

After the opening session and keynote speaker, members took part in a tour of campus provided by McCook college students. 

In the afternoon, students chose three mini-sessions to attend including “Drug Trends” by Sherriff Kurt Kapperman from Furnace County, “FCCLA Leadership Basics” presented by the state officers, “The Financial Fitness Basics” presented by PEER Officer Sabra Schmidt, “Volunteering in Fire Service and Fire Safety” presented by the Red Willow Volunteer Fire Department, “Teen Gender Violence Prevention” presented by Kaiti Dingers, “Entrepreneurship” presented by the McCook Economic Development, “Kids and Dreams Foundation Operation Shine Camp” presented by Aaron Bly and Levi Rogers and “Open STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) Events” presented by State and National STAR competitors from Chase County and Medicine Valley.

Perkins County High FCCLA members also participated in the Senior Creed Speaking Contest and Poster Contest.

Poster Contest: second place—Jessica Klingelhoefer and Kadie Hanson; third plac—Joshua Barnes and Eric Sandberg.

Cobey Werner participated in the Senior Creed Speaking Contest but did not place. 

Other members who participated in the Poster Contest were Bella Fraizer, Laura Dreiling, Allisa Overstreet and Jasmine Schulze.
