Perkins County FFA competes at range judging

On Wednesday, Sept. 12, the FFA travelled to Bridgeport to compete in range judging. The contest consists of a junior division and a senior division. It was a good day for the Plainsmen, as they took home a fourth place ribbon in the senior division.

The contest contains three parts to test how well each contestant knows an ecological site.

First, the contestant must know how to identify a type of plant. They must also have some prior knowledge about that specific plant that is being identified.

Next, the contestant must be able to identify soil and identify some characteristics about it.

Lastly, the contestant must be able to know how to manage the plants on an ecological site if livestock are added to that site.

All of the contestants at range judging learned the specifics about ecological sites. This contest, and many more contests through the FFA, are used to build knowledge in a specific career.

The participants can then take this knowledge into the real world to achieve their career goals.

Senior division results:

Tanner Burge, 10th place, green ribbon; Caleb Lagler, 11th place tie, green ribbon; Kaden Smith, 21st place; Alex Poppe, 28th place tie; Aaron Fay, 31st place; Kyler Bullock, 38th place; Team of Burge, Lagler, Smith and Poppe, fourth place, white ribbon.

Junior division results:

Dani Burge, 35th place; Rylee Huff, 48th place.
