Principal Friedel to retire

Four teachers contracts approved

Perkins County High School Principal Dean Friedel submitted his resignation with the intent to retire at the end of this school year. Friedel has spent 21 years at PCS and 34 years in education. 

Superintendent Phillip Picquet said they had 10 applicants for the principal position and four applicants will be interviewed today (Wednesday). 

Student ambassadors will lead applicants through different interview groups containing Picquet, board members, teachers, classified staff, parent representatives and students. 

The board plans to approve a contract at a special meeting scheduled for Tuesday, April 2 at 7 p.m.

Contracts approved

Four teacher contracts were approved for the 2019-20 school year at the school board meeting on March 18. Samantha Snogren will be teaching fourth grade, Sarah Loeffler will teach first grade, Whitney Soper will teach secondary English and Seth Burge will teach secondary science. 

“It’s kind of unique that we have three people that we’re hiring who graduated from this school,” said Picquet. 

The board approved Picquet’s contract at a 1.7 percent salary increase totaling $137,295.

Activities

Activities Director Jeremy Struckman reported that PCS will be hosting five track meets this season. 

• Varsity preseason was held March 21.

• Junior high-—April 11

• SPVA junior high—May 2

• Varsity—May 4

• Varsity districts-—May 8

Honor’s Night will be held Tuesday, May 7. 

Elementary Field Day will be held Friday, May 10. 

Struckman said the 2019-20 sports schedule is complete and contracts with other schools are nearly finished. Referees have been contracted for all home events. 

Varsity football will be in its second year of a two-year cycle of eight-man football before eligibility is reassessed.
