Radon poster contest winners announced

Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department (SWNPHD) announced their 10th annual Radon Poster Contest winners. This year’s contest included three age groups and was open to children ages 9-14 years old.

In the 13-14 age division, Dayami Ruiz Vazquez, Kailee Potts and Mallory McClenahan took first, second and third respectively.

“The radon poster contest encourages students to learn more about radon and its health effects,” explains Helena Janousek, Program Manager.  “It is fun to see the new poster designs each year produced by the students.”

Winners were presented with prizes by Janousek and Program Assistant Joy Trail, who congratulated them on helping to educate their community about the dangers of radon.

Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States.   It is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas that enters homes and buildings and cannot be detected unless it is tested.  Do-it-yourself test kits are available at SWNPHD offices or by mail for a small fee.

Photos of top posters can be found on the website at www.swhealth.ne.gov and on Facebook and Twitter.

SWNPHD is located at 404 West 10th Street, McCook and 501 Broadway, Imperial.
