Seniors make history in quiz bowl careers

The Perkins County High School quiz bowl team finished their season at the ESU No. 16 District Quiz Bowl Tournament in Sutherland on April 9.

Perkins County went 1-2 on the day to finish with a tie for fifth place.

They defeated Hyannis 50-5, and lost to Sutherland and NPSP, 35-50 and 15-45 respectively.

Other participating schools included Paxton, Arthur, Stapleton, Hershey, South Platte, Mullen, Hyannis, North Platte St. Pat’s, Sutherland, Brady and Ogallala.

Team members include seniors: Kenyon Gaar (captain), Zach Malmkar, Jaci Kurkowski, Jack Kohl, Chris Terry and Nathan Kemling; sophomores: Jacob Woodmancy and Matthew Wendell; and freshman: Ethan Terry and Keegan Sims. The team is coached by Deanne Bishop.

Seniors

The team’s six seniors have a combined 19 years of experience in the high school quiz bowl circuit. In that time, they’ve never finished lower than third in the SPVA conference.

They’ve helped the team win the SPVA conference championship twice (2016, 2018) and district runner-up twice to qualify for the all-class state tournament (2015, 2017).

In 2017, they finished in the top 9 percent of all quiz bowl teams, in all classes, in the entire state.

These seniors have helped compiled more wins in their four-year stretch than any other since Perkins County started quiz bowl in 2006.

Congratulations to them on a fabulous run!
