Students impress judges at science fair

The Perkins County Middle School Science Fair kicked off early Friday morning as students filled Pritchett Gym with their project displays.

Three students participated in what middle school science teacher and science fair organizer Jennifer Gonzalez referred to as “alternative projects.”

Students who participated with alternative projects were Maddox Lee, Jessey Moore and Kayden Siep.

When the final round came about, the judges could not decide on who the top ten participants would be, so the ranking was expanded to the top 13 projects.

The following students placed in the top 13:

• Ben Skeels and Jackson Wykert: Conductors and Insulators

• Emmalee Parsley and Casey Johnson: Natural vs Artificial Smells

• Cooper Kroeker: Is There a Natural Herbicide that will Kill Palmer Amaranth and not Corn?

• Myles Bishop: How Acidic Substances Affect Apple Browning

• Emily Cornelius: How Effective are Disinfectants?

• Eric Gonzalez: Bioremediation of Pharmaceutical Waste

• Brenna Colglazier: The Aerodynamics of Airplanes

• Mason McGreer: How Can We Reduce the Amount of Toilet Paper and Toilet Water Used?

• Ava Seger and Hannah Bishop: How to Make a Runoff Filter

• Brock Tines: Does Dimple Size Affect How Far Golf Balls Travel?

• Preston Schwanebeck: Hovercraft Mechanics

• Madi Swesey, Does the Weight of an Object Affect how Fast an Object Falls?

The top three included two projects for each rank.

Jacqueline Gloy and Preston Schwanebeck were ranked third. Emmalee Parsley and Casey Johnson, and Eric Gonzalez were ranked second. Emily Cornelius and Mason McGreer were ranked first.

The top finalists will continue on to the Nebraska Junior Academy of Sciences Western Regional Science Fair at Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in Curtis, Neb. on Sunday, March 21.

After the NJAS Western Regional Science Fair, there will be an opportunity to compete at the State Science Fair at Wesleyan College in Lincoln, Neb. in April.
