Pitchin' With Pritch: Games, activities make for busy week

Another week of pretty good watching material in the sports world. Some of that was a disappointment when the game was over, but still a lot of good things to see.

You had a little bit of everything going on: Creighton and the Huskers playing conference games, the Husker Women trying to keep their season going well and then high school basketball and wrestling. Throw in robotics and speech meets and you have a full week of activity.

Watched KU lose a game on their home court. If nothing else, I can say I saw something that very seldom happens. Bill Self has only lost about a dozen games in his tenure at KU which started in 2003, so a loss in Allen Field House is a rare thing to say the least.

Baylor defeated the Jayhawks Saturday 67-55 for their 13th win of the season. Baylor is a good basketball team and the game wasn’t decided on a last-minute shot or anything like that. Baylor won the game by playing better than Kansas the entire game. It happens even with good teams—rare, but it can happen.

Sunday afternoon, I watched Wichita State, which is a pretty good basketball team, blow a nine-point lead in the last 90 seconds of the game but recovered and won over UConn in double overtime.

Wichita State is a team like any team that can have problems and lose a lead, but the way they lost a nine-point lead late in the game was unbelievable. About every way you could turn the ball over or miss a shot, they managed to do it in 90 seconds. BUT they recovered and still won a big game on the road.

Then there’s the Husker men’s basketball team. Friday night at PBA the Huskers played Rutgers and I thought maybe they hadn’t been able to practice for a few days or something because in my opinion, they were terrible. Another conference loss on your home court.

So, my trip to Lincoln to watch them play Iowa was made with a hope that they would just be competitive. Well there was a whole different group on the floor I think.

This group played defense with great intensity. They shot the ball much better than against Rutgers. They got most of the loose balls, they rebounded better and in the end they won.

Then they go to Northwestern to play a team that hadn’t won a Big 10 game yet this season. Well now they have!

The Huskers couldn’t get much going and gave up 42 points the first half and ended up getting beat 62-57.

Just as in the football situation, I think this coaching staff will get things going. They have some spots that need to be improved (code for better recruiting) and then I think things will be much brighter. At least I hope so.

The Plainsmen teams had a good outing on Saturday. The wrestling team had a good outing as did the boys and girls basketball teams. Hope they continue to improve and be ready for the time when the tournaments come around.

Then there was the NFL playoff game between Kansas City and Houston. I have never seen a team come back in the fashion that the Chiefs did to win a game.

KC was down 24 -0 in the first quarter and then had the lead at half and ended up winning 51-31. A 51 to 7 run isn’t something you see very many times when the winner was down 24-0 to start the comeback.

KC might win it all and then, they might not, but that was impressive.
