Senior Ian Picquet eyes the hoop as he goes up for this shot against Wauneta-Palisade Friday. He finished with a pair of baskets.

After 68-43 win Friday, PC falls to Irish in SPVA opener

Things go a lot better when his team is able to score, Plainsmen boys Coach Shawn Cole said this week.

In the first half at Chase County last week, the Plainsmen went on a run to close the first half within seven of the Longhorns.

Then, the Plainsmen couldn’t get shots to fall. They were good shots, Cole said, the kind he wants his team to shoot.

And by cold, that means 0-10 from the field in the third quarter.

At the other end of the court, the Longhorns took control of the game with 18 points, en route to handing the Plainsmen a 70-38 loss.

In the second half, the Plainsmen scored just eight points.

Conversely, the Plainsmen hung 68 points on the Wauneta-Palisade Broncos Friday en route to 68-43 win.

The Plainsmen doubled their shooting success Friday during a “throw-back” game played in the Pitchett gym, in jerseys honoring former long-time coach Larry Pritchett.

After shooting just 25% against the Longhorns, Perkins County dropped 51% of their shots against the Broncos.

The Broncos played a 2-3 zone that the Plainsmen were able to exploit, especially outside the arc.

They dropped 38% of their three-pointers, making 12 of 32 attempts. Hunter Garner hit six of those, followed by Triston Hite who hit five in the first half.

On Monday, the Plainsmen traveled to St. Pat’s for a rematch in the first round of the SPVA.

In their meeting two weeks ago, the Plainsmen got beat in transition defense, a problem that was evident against Chase County as well.

That hurt PC again Monday, along with the inability to score, falling to the Irish for a second time 69-32.

St. Pat’s took an 10-point lead at the end of the first quarter after getting a layup at the buzzer to go up 18-8.

The Plainsmen could only get five on the board in the second, giving up two more late layups, to go in at half down 28-13.

The Plainsmen will return to SPVA action in the fifth place game at 11 a.m. Saturday at the North Platte Community College gym.

They will play the winner of the Sutherland-Kimball game scheduled for Thursday.
