Board decides on eight-man football

Perkins County Schools will remain an eight-man football team for at least the 2018 season, a decision made unanimously by the PCS board on Monday, Nov. 20.

Under new football classification numbers set by the Nebraska School Activities Association (NSAA), Perkins County was over Class D1 eligibility by just five boys.

The board felt that because of low football participation numbers, moving to Class C2 to compete in 11-man wasn’t a viable option.

By choosing to continue compete in Class D1 eight-man football for the two-year cycle, Perkins County will no longer be eligible for playoffs. They will still play eight regular season games.

However, the NSAA voted at their last board meeting to permit football schools that opt down in classification in year one of the cycle to be eligible for the playoffs in year two if their enrollment number drops within the range.
