A photo-finish ended the D-8 District Meet in Grant with Caden Waitley of PC beating Paxton’s Mason Schimonitz by 0.04 seconds in the final leg of the 1600 relay. The team and crowd eagerly awaited the times to appear to reveal the winner.

Boys district track champions, 10 going to state

The PC boys were named D-8 District Champions at the district meet held in Grant on Friday, May 10.

Earning 102 points, the team came in 25 points ahead of second-place team Brady.

Nine boys qualified in eight individual events and three relays and Hailey Snyder qualified in one for the girls.

The final event of the day ended with a photo-finish in the 1600 relay, with PC taking first by 0.04 seconds. Runners include Junior Alex Patrick and Seniors Matthew Hahn, Jaden Dietlein and Caden Waitley.

The 3200 relay including Dietlein, Freshman Colton Pouk, Hahn and Waitley also took first for the trip to state.

Junior Trye Hickey, Patrick, Freshman Triston Hite and Senior Beau Wood placed third in the 400 relay, but were among the next seven fastest times in all districts, which qualified them for state.

Patrick will be busy at the state meet this year, as he qualified in all four of his events. In addition to the two relays, he placed second in the 100 and 400.

Junior Evan Sestak earned a trip to state in high jump by making the qualifying height at 5-11, placing third. He opted out after clearing the height due to an injured ankle. He placed second to qualify in 110 hurdles.

In addition to the relays, earning a trip to state with golds were Waitley in the 800, Wendell in the 1600 and Dietlein in the 3200.

Wood placed second in 300 hurdles to compete in Omaha this weekend.

Other medalists contributing to the district win included Caleb Lagler in the 1600, Wood and Spencer Ross in shot put and Hite in pole vault.

Hailey Snyder was the lone girls qualifier with first in the triple jump.

Head Coach Shayne Hite said he really thought Snyder’s time in the 400, as well as the girls 1600 relay, would get them qualified, but the other districts had some really fast times. He noted those were probably two of the stronger events in Class D this year.

The girls scored 29 points to tie for sixth. Point contributors included Snyder in the triple jump, 400 and 200, Hallie Fisher in pole vault and the girls 400 and 1600 relays.

Hite said they had a lot of compliments on how well the meet went, so they are hopeful they can get it back next year.
