Boys finish second, girls third at XC opener

Perkins County cross country runners got a great start to their season with a second place boys finish and third place girls finish at the season opener in North Platte on Aug. 31.

The boys finished only five points behind first place team Doniphan-Trumbull with 23 points, leaving a 45-point gap between third place finishers North Platte St. Pat’s.

Junior Caden Waitley captured first place with a time of 17:49. Junior Jaden Dietlein followed 34 seconds behind to take second. 

Senior Nathan Kemling ran 19:26 for an eighth place finish. Matthew Hahn and Jarin Tines medaled at 12th and 14th respectively. Sophomore Caleb Lagler finished in the top 20.

Junior Hailey Snyder finished ninth for the girls with a time of 24:05. Seniors and first-year runners Karen Ruiz and Valerie Perez finished in the top 20. 

Coach Paula Wurst said they were very pleased with how all the runners performed, from the medalists to the beginners.
