Boys third, girls fifth at SPVA

Track athletes finally got to enjoy competing in some decent weather during Friday’s SPVA conference meet held in Grant.

Perkins County Head Track Coach Shayne Hite it was almost too hot for some of his runners.

Hite said he was pleased with the efforts of his Plainsmen athletes.

His teams aren’t especially deep so a third place finish for the boys was right in line with his expectations.

After the meet, he said he ran through his mind what he could have done to get them four more points.

That would have tied them for third. Instead, they finished fifth in the seven-team meet.

Hite said Chase County showed what depth can do for a team. They won the boys and girls meet titles.

On Tuesday, a number of Plainsmen traveled to Sutherland to participate in the Best of the Midwest meet.

On the top eight athletes in the area compete in the meet.

On Friday, the regular season ends with the twilight meet at Dundy County Stratton.

He plans to take it easy on Friday for those athletes who competed Tuesday. That’s because he wants them fresh for next week’s C9 district meet at Sutherland on May 13.

This will give some of his younger kids the opportunity to compete at DCS, he said.

Speaking of districts, Hite’s contemplating on which events to run junior Colton Pouk in.

At SPVA, Pouk ran the 400 and finished fifth. He ran his signature race, the 800, in 2:07.13 for a first place finish.

Hite put Pouk in the 1,600 and he turned in a second place finish and leads the C9 district with a time of 5:06.

Hite said he’ll probably put him in both events at districts which will mean some shuffling with the relays.

In other scoring, Casey Hanson took first in the long jump at 20-4.5, was third with a PR in the 400 and sixth in the 100.

Triston Hite took second in the triple jump with a personal best and a tie for third in the pole vault.

Hunter Garner won the high jump at 5-10 for a personal best. Nolan Foster had a PR in the 110 hurdles, finishing seventh.

The 4x100 and 4x400 each took fourth while the 4x800 took fifth.

On the girls side at SPVA, Kailee Potts led the scoring with second place finishes and PRs in both hurdle events.

Hallie Fisher had a PR in the 300 hurdles while Ava Reese turned in a PR in the 110 hurdles.

Dani Burge turned in a PR in the discus, finishing fifth.
