Cross Country boys place third

The Perkins County Cross Country team placed third at their season opener at the St. Pats Invite in North Platte on Thursday, Sept. 5.

Evan Sestak and Colton Pouk returned home with seventh and eighth place medals respectively. Tony Lyon was just out of the medals at 16th.

The girls lone runner freshman Meredith Gloy placed 18th.

Head Coach Seth Burge said he was happy with the three weeks of conditioning the runners put in up to their first meet. He said they fought through the 95-degree heat and he’s proud of how well each of them ran.

Burge noted Sestak and Pouk both ran negative splits, which is exactly how they have been training, so it was good to see them put practice into play.

Pouk worked hard the entire race to pass 13 runners from the 1 mile to the finish. Sestak also passed over 11 runners.

“It was fun to see them neck and neck at the end of the race as they pushed each other in a friendly battle to the finish line.

“The three freshmen runners had a good first meet in order to shake the nerves away. We are looking forward to seeing more competitive teams at the Chase County Invite this week,” said Burge.

Hershey took first and Doniphan-Trumbull claimed second.

The team will compete in Imperial on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 3:30 p.m.
