District meet Thursday at Sutherland

Where has the track season gone? With inclement weather affecting the first several weeks of the season, it’s hard to believe it’s time for district track.

Perkins County’s boys and girls will be competing in the C9 district meet in Sutherland Thursday, vying for a berth in the state track meet next weekend.

Head Track Coach Shayne Hite said his kids are ready to compete.

A number of athletes competed in the Best of the Midwest meet in Sutherland May 4. As a result, he cut down the number of events those athletes competed in at the Dundy County Stratton twilight Friday.

His goal was to keep their legs fresh so they’re ready to compete Thursday at districts.

Hite feels his team is ready for the meet and is optimistic there will be a number of state qualifiers.

The first two places in each individual event qualify for state.

In running events, there are an additional six qualifiers with the fastest non-qualifying times in the class.

The same is true for the next six best marks in the long jump, triple jump, discus and shot.

In pole vault and high jump the only additional qualifiers are those athletes which meet the minimum qualifying heights.

For Class C boys, that’s 13-5 in the pole vault and 6-1 in the high jump. For the girls, it’s 9-10 in the pole vault and 5-0 in the high jump.

In relays, the first place team automatically qualifies, along with the next seven times in the class, regardless of district finish.

Going into districts, Colton Pouk has the fastest time in both the 800 and 1,600 at 2.05.65 and 5:01.78 respectively. Hite only put Pouk in the 1,600 at DCS, turning in his best time of the season.

Casey Hanson stands second in the long jump with a season best of 20-8, along with the fourth-fastest time in the 400 at 53.29.

Hunter Garner is second in the high jump with a season best of 5-10.

Chase Johnson sits fourth in the shot put with a best of 42-2.5  while Triston Hite is fifth in the triple jump with a 37-10 mark.

The 4x100 relay goes in second in the district and Hite feels they may be able to qualify on time if they don’t finish first.

The 4x400 relay comes in at third.

On the girls side, Kailee Potts goes in second in the 300 hurdles at 49.32 and third in the 100 hurdles at 16.91. Ava Reese is fifth in the 100 hurdles at 17.27.

Autumn Anderson comes in fourth in the triple jump at 31-3 with Ryle Huff in seventh at 30-7.75.

Dani Burge is sixth in the discus at 102-4.

The 4x400 relay team goes in second in the district and will be looking to make state as an additional qualifier.

DCS Twilight meet

Hite said the younger members of his team showed up strong at the DCS meet. Pulling some of his state contenders from events enabled more kids the opportunity to compete.

In total, 14 boys turned in personal bests in their events along with 8 girls.

Best of the Midwest

Hanson and Pouk made the best showing at the Best of the Midwest.

Hanson took second in the long jump and fifth in the 400 while Pouk took third in the 800 with his fastest time of the season.

Hite was fourth in the triple jump, followed by Nolan Foster in seventh.

Chase Johnson was seventh in the shot put with Hunter Garner finishing eighth in the high jump.

Kailee Potts took fourth in both hurdle events, turning in a person best in the 300s.

Both the boys 4x100 relay and the girls 4x400 finished fifth.
