Four wrestlers advance to district meet

Four Plainsmen wrestlers will be vying for a trip to the state tournament in Omaha next week.

Mason Toner, a 120-pounder, Colton Pouk at 138, Brandon Knoles at 220 and heavy weight Austin Meyer all advanced out of the D4 subdistrict B Friday.

They’ll compete at this week’s D4 district meet in Sutherland, with the top four in each weight class earning a state berth.

Head Coach Tanner Collins expects all four to qualify for the state meet.

Collins said Toner, freshman,  has lost a lot of close matches this season and needs to get a win or two at subdistricts to advance out of a five-man bracket a Sutherland.

Colton Pouk takes a 20-6 record into the district meet. Pouk finished second Friday, losing a 5-0 decision to Sutherland’s Sam Foster.

Collins said Pouk got a takedown early in the match but the referee saw something different and he didn’t get the points. That takedown would have been huge, Collins said. As it was, it seemed to break Pouk’s momentum.

Knoles and Meyer each won their subdistrict bracket, which should help their pairings at the district meet.

Knoles only wrestled once, pinning his opponent in 2:21.

Meyer won both of his matches with a pin, needing just 53 seconds in the semifinal and 1:29 in the finals to advance to Saturday’s meet.

Collins said it’s really important for his wrestlers to finish second or better at the distict meet to help their seeding in the 16-man brackets at the state meet.

The coach said Brient Wood, Bryder Hickey and Huntin Taylor needed to win their first matches. The losses forced them to wrestle back in the consolation bracket in order to qualify to move on.

Saturday’s meet at Sutherland begins at 9 a.m. MT.
