Thirty-one-year old Brendan Geier, originally from Wauneta, will step into the role of head Plainsmen football coach this fall, filling the position last filled by Tanner Collins. Last week Geier was able to see his team up close on the gridiron for the first time during a four-day camp.

At PCS, Geier will also fill the teaching position of Jr./Sr. High PE teacher, which was also filled by Collins.

Ninth Year Teaching

The 2023-24 school year will be Geier’s ninth year of teaching, with his first two teaching middle school special education at Cross County Public Schools in Stromsburg, and the last six years teaching K-12 Physical Education at Sutherland Public Schools.

Geier comes from a family of educators and coaches who loved sports. His dad is currently the superintendent and head football coach at Wauneta-Palisade, and his two older sisters are teachers.

While in high school Geier competed in football, basketball and track.

Geier has been involved with football in some capacity for his entire teaching career.

“My first two years, I was head junior high football at Cross County. At Sutherland, I was head junior high football coach for four years, assistant high school football coach for one season and have spent the past five years as the head high school football coach,” he said. “I have also been an assistant track coach the past six years.”

Coming to PCS

Geier said he wanted to come to PCS for a variety of reasons.

“The school district has a positive reputation both locally and state-wide, and the teaching and head football positions were very appealing to me,” he said.

When asked about his views and strategies when it comes to football, he said it all comes down to fundamentals.

“Fundamentals are the cornerstone of any successful program,” he said. “The ability to block and tackle will be an emphasis from week to week.”

Geier said his goals for each game are the same each year he has been involved with the sport.

“These are to improve each week and be playing to our potential by the end of the season,” he said. “I also want to make sure each athlete has a positive experience with the game of football.”

He said he likes to be consistent week to week with his routine, including practices and game preparation.

“Regardless of our opponent, we will prepare and practice at a high level, we are in control of our attitude and our effort,” he said.

Looking forward to
the season

Geier said he is looking forward to the upcoming season and being a part of the Perkins County School System.

“I have tremendous appreciation for the history and tradition of this football program,” he said.

Serving as assistant coaches this year for the Plainsmen will be Steve Snyder, Ryan Boldt and Eric McCormick.

The first day of fall sports practices for the Plainsmen will be Monday, Aug. 7. The team will have a public scrimmage on either August 17 or 18. More details will be forthcoming, Geier said.

The team’s first varsity game will be Friday, Aug. 25 in Bridgeport starting at 6 p.m.
