Golfers fourth at Bayard

Perkins County’s girls golf team showed the kind of improvement in their first tournament of the year that Coach Rich Borman was looking for.

At the Bayard meet last week, the Plainsmen finished with a team score of 523.

The key thing about that score is that it’s 56 strokes less than the team recorded at last year’s Bayard meet.

That placed them fourth in the team scoring that included five teams.

Eleven teams competed but only five had enough golfers to record team scores.

Senior Kayla Reichenberg led the Plainsmen with a 118 on rounds of 62-58. She was just six strokes out of the medal race.

Sarah Cockerill finished with a 134 (68-66), Maddy Ingold shot 135 on rounds of 66-69, Emmy Sims went 69-67 for a 136 and Emma Klahn finished at 173 on rounds of 88-85.

Borman said one of the key stats they keep track of is number of putts.

He said their goal is to finish with no more than 36 putts—two a hole. Reichenberg finished with 33.

What was also interesting, he said, is that Ingold, who picked up the game just four months ago, shot a 135 with 48 putts.

He said they work hard on putting drills and are also working on taking less strokes to get from tee to green.

The girls were in action again Tuesday, traveling to Kimball for their invitational.

Thursday they travel to Chappell for the Creek Valley invite.
