Knoles first, Pouk second at Doniphan

Junior Brandon Knoles ran his record in the 225 class to 36-11 with five pins during a dual at Kearney Catholic Friday and the Doniphan-Trumbell invite Saturday.

His four-pin streak Saturday included some revenge in the championship match.

Earlier this season at Broken Bow, Alex Flessner of Ord handed Knoles two of his 11 losses.

Knoles left little doubt Saturday, putting Flessner to the mat in just 27 seconds to claim the 225 title.

Coulton Pouk ran his record at 138 to 28-15 with three pins and a 5-4 decision Saturday to put him in the championship match with Cross County/Osceola’s 46-0 Cameron Graham.

Coach Tanner Collins said Pouk held a 2-1 lead late in the first period but made a little mistake that Graham capitalized on to end the match.

Austin Meyer Done

Collins said sophomore Austin Meyers caught a bad break, literally when he took Ord’s C.J. Hoevet down to the mat in the first period.

Meyer’s right arm was wrapped around Hoevet and it came down under Hoevet. The fall broke the big bone in his right wrist in two.

Meyer took the loss in an injury default and will miss the remainder of the season.

Collins said Meyer will need surgery to fully repair the break.

The only good thing that came out of it is that Collins doesn’t have to decide which Meyers twin will get to wrestle in districts next week.

If Perkins County was in Class D, both could wrestle in the same class. However, that is not allowed in Class C.

His brother Ashton finished fifth in the heavyweight class with Trye Hickey finishing sixth at 132 and Kyler Bullock seventh at 170.

SPVA this week

This week, the wrestlers travel to Bridgeport Thursday for the SPVA meet.

Collins is still without Jace Wid at 160. He suffered a rib injury at Chadron and missed all of last week with sickness.

He’ll start physical therapy this week in hopes of getting released for the district meet Feb. 14-15 at Hershey.

Bryder Hickey was sick last week and didn’t make the trip to Kearney and Doniphan but should be ready to go this week.
