Holiday Tournament vs Wallace

After earning a victory against Hyannis Dec. 21, Perkins County moved on to the final round of the tournament  Dec. 22 where they faced the Wallace Lady Cats.

The Lady Plainsmen started off strong and picked up 18 points in the first quarter to Wallace’s 11 points.

Perkins County’s lead grew in the second quarter, where they gained 15 more points. The Lady Cats were not far behind after scoring 13 points, leaving the game 33-24 at half.

The Lady Plainsmen continued to grow their lead in the third quarter, scoring 10 points to Wallace’s seven, making the score 43-31 going into the final quarter.

Perkins County’s girls held the Lady Cats to just three points in the fourth, while scoring 12 points themselves, ending the game 55-34.

Freshman Kailee Potts was the top scorer for Perkins County with 15 points by the end of the game against Wallace.

Coach Deanne Bishop said the girls played excellent defense and capitalized on full-court pressure to score points in transition.

“Each game was an example of ‘unselfish ball;’ girls were looking to set their teammates up for success,” Bishop said of both the Hyannis and Wallace games.

Ogallala

After a week-long break from games and practice, Perkins County hosted Ogallala Saturday, Jan. 2.

The Lady Plainsmen gained their first point with 6:44 on the clock when Senior Dani Burge sank one of two free throw shots.

Perkins County scored just three more points in the first quarter, a two-point field goal and a free throw shot from Potts. Meanwhile, Ogallala scored 15 points, making the score 15-4 at the end of the first.

The Lady Plainsmen stayed neck-and-neck with Ogallala in the second quarter, scoring nine points to Ogallala’s 10. The game was 25-13 going into the second half, with Ogallala’s Indians ahead.

In the third quarter, the only points for Perkins County came from a two-point shot from sophomore Meredith Gloy and a free throw made by Potts.

Ogallala scored 15 points to Perkins County’s three points, leaving the score 40-16 heading into the final quarter of the game.

In the fourth, Perkins County held the Indians to just four points, while scoring 13 points for the Lady Plainsmen. Though they played hard, it wasn’t enough to take the win.

Ogallala defeated Perkins County 44-29 in the end, making the Lady Plainsmen’s record 4-4.

Potts was again the top scorer with nine points, and Gloy was not far behind with six.

Bishop said the girls played a fairly solid defense. They out-rebounded Ogallala, forced 15 steals and had 22 deflections on their passes.

“As the game went on, we did a better job of executing our offensive sets and got some nice looks,” Bishop added. “However, we had way too many turnovers.”

She pointed out that while Perkins County lost the game, the team is improving. Last year, the Lady Plainsmen lost to Ogallala by 45 points, closing the gap this year to just a 15-point deficit.

“The girls are working hard and moving in the right direction,” Bishop said.

Next Action

Including their game against Ogallala Jan. 2, the Lady Plainsmen entered a 14 day stretch filled with games, with six varsity games alone.

According to Bishop it is “all hands on deck,” and she is grateful the team has enough players to make this work.

“I’m grateful for the PCS administration who has worked tirelessly with us to keep kids in school and participating in activities,” she said.

The team will first head to North Platte on Friday, Jan. 8 where they will face the St. Pat’s. The varsity girls are set to start at 5 p.m.

Saturday, Jan. 9, the girls have another away game, this time against Sutherland beginning at 4 p.m.

Tuesday, Jan. 12, the Lady Plainsmen suit up for a make-up game in Paxton. The varsity girls game will start immediately after the boys jayvee game, which is estimated to end around 6 p.m.

Bishop said they expect to see a lot of high-tempo games, ball pressure and physicality.

Games can be viewed online through the PCS website.
