Lady Plainsmen add losses to record

The Lady Plainsmen volleyball team played three close games this week but were unable to come up with any wins.

On Tuesday, Sept. 19 Perkins County hosted a triangular on their home court in Grant with the Creek Valley Storm and Sutherland Sailors.

The triangular marked the first home games the Plainsmen have played this season, which took place during Homecoming week.

Tuesday, Sept. 21 Perkins County traveled to Ogallala to battle long-time rival, the Ogallala Indians.

Creek Valley

Creek Valley defeated Perkins County in two sets, 25-19, 25-18, in their first game of triangular play.

The Plainsmen struggled in the first quarter to consistently get the ball to their setter, which held them from running a fully efficient offense.

As the second set came, the Plainsmen were getting passes to their setter, but were hitting balls out of bounds, racking up points for the Storm.

Head Coach Erica Turner stated the Plainsmen “were very up and down when it came to that [getting passes to the setter] and need to be able to put a full game together.”

Emma Schrotberger: 6 points; Aryn Seiler: 5 kills, 8 digs, 2 solo blocks; Dani Burge: 3 kills; Sydney Wilson; 3 kills, 2 solo blocks; Kadie Hanson: 21 digs; Jess Klingelhoefer: 12 set assists.

Sutherland

Sutherland defeated Perkins County in their second game of the triangle in two sets, 25-20, 25-15.

Coach Turner was very pleased with how her team played the first set of the game.

“Our girls came out firing and weren’t going to give Sutherland an easy game,” she stated.

The Plainsmen played well against Sutherland’s powerful hitters and were able to pick the ball up off hits as well as quickly react at the net off blocks.

The Plainsmen saw some defensive improvement during their game against the Sailors, something Coach Turner was happy to see.

Hanson: 5 points, 14 digs; Schrotberger: 5 points; Seiler: 7 kills, 8 digs, 3 solo blocks; Wilson: 6 kills, 5 solo blocks; Klingelhoefer: 10 set assists.

Ogallala

Ogallala defeated Perkins County in three sets, 25-18, 25-19, 25-10.

Both the Plainsmen and Indians stepped on the court ready to play Thursday night. Both teams were looking for a victory.

Perkins County looked strong from the start. Defensively, the Plainsmen were digging balls they don’t usually seem to pick up and were getting several blocks and touches at the net.

“That really got our adrenaline going and we were able to plug away, point after point,” said Turner.

The first two sets were close in score as the Plainsmen hung with the Indians and continued to respond defensively.

“Our defense was a huge factor in us playing well,” stated Coach Turner.

However, the Plainsmen were unable to keep the high energy they started with. They began to rally late in the set, but the Indians had created too much of a point gap and were able to run away with the set, ending the game at three sets.

Coach Turner was proud of the efforts made by her team and the improvement in their play. “It didn’t really feel like we lost that game, because a lot of improvement was made.”

Wilson: 4 kills, 8 blocks; Burge: 4 kills; Seiler: 3 kills, 7 blocks; Hanson: 12 digs; Schrotberger: 14 digs, 7 points; Klingelhoefer: 8 blocks, 10 set assists; Frazier: 6 blocks.
