The Perkins County Plainsmen volleyball team had a full slate of competition this past week, hitting the court for four different match ups, including two triangulars and a road game. The girls walked away with some strong wins and tough lessons, putting their season record at 4-2.
The week began on September 2 at Brady High School in a triangular against the Brady Eagles and the South Platte Blue Knights. Perkins County first faced the host team, Brady, in a tight two-set contest. The Eagles edged out the Plainsmen in the first set 25-22 before finishing the match with a 25-17 win in the second set.
The Plainsmen rebounded quickly in their next match against South Platte. Strong play and energy carried Perkins County to a sweep, taking the first set 25-20 and the second set 25-14.
On September 4, the Plainsmen traveled to North Platte to face St. Patrick’s in a four-set battle. The Irish won the opening set 26-24, but the Plainsmen came alive in the next three. Perkins County claimed the second set 25-23, pulled ahead in the third set 25-16, and closed it out in the fourth set 25-13.
The momentum didn’t carry over to September 6, when Perkins County faced Maywood-Hayes Center. The Wolves proved to be a challenge, sweeping the Plainsmen in three sets. MHC claimed the first set 25-22, followed with a 25-14 win, and finished the match 25-23.
Perkins County bounced back later in the week with another triangular. First, the girls faced Hitchcock County and earned a strong two-set victory, winning 25-18 and 25-20. They followed with a three-set match against Wallace. After dropping the first set 25-21, Perkins County regrouped and came back strong, winning the second set 25-18 and sealing the match with a 25-20 win in the third.
Head coach Monica Cole praised her team’s effort and resilience through a demanding week of games.
“It is still early in the season, so we are still finding things that we need to work on and get better at, but at the same time are doing some things exceptionally well,” Cole said. “The game of volleyball has a lot of highs and lows and we are just trying to stay focused on the way that we can unite ourselves and create the team chemistry that we need to be able to get to the top by the end of the season. We’re at the fun part, playing games, but practice time is important to be able to get ourselves comfortably and considerably better in between each match.”
The Lady Plainsmen will return to the court on September 16 when they host a triangular in Grant against South Platte and the Paxton Tigers. Matches begin at 5 p.m.
