Steffen has accepted a position at Elmwood, making this his last game as head coach for the PC girls.

Lady Plainsmen end season

In the first round of sub-districts, the Lady Plainsmen traveled to Hershey to play the North Platte Lady Irish on Tuesday, Feb. 13.

The Lady Irish took the score to 18-0 by the end of the first, and despite five points up for PC in the second, at halftime the game belonged to North Platte, 41-5.

Down by 39 points and looking at the end of their season, the Lady Plainsmen continued to fight and added six points in the third, and four in the fourth to give them 15. NPSP took the win with 54.

Senior Sydney Wilson was the top scorer of the game with four, all of which came from the free throw line. Kyla Brueggeman put up a trey, while Maggie Earl and Dani Burge each put up three points in the game. Also contributing a basket was freshman Miah Long.

END OF SEASON

The loss to North Platte ended the season for the Lady Plainsmen with a 2-17 record.

Head Coach Lance Steffen said, “I thought the girls bought in this year. They played hard and believed in what we were doing. The wins didn’t materialize more than last year, but I thought we competed better than we did last year in games that we lost.”

Senior Maggie Earl was the top scorer of the season, contributing 129 points.

Also a senior, Sydney Wilson was the team’s second highest scorer with 79 points.

Freshman Dani Burge scored the third most points this season, with 59.

Hailey Snyder, a junior, put up 53 points, and was the teams top 3-point shooter, with nine treys for the season.

Senior Kyla Bruggeman had five 3-pointers and six baskets for the season. Adding in her free throws gave her a total of 32 points.

Other contributors to the score board for the Lady Plainsmen this season were Laura Dreiling, a senior, with 13 points, freshman Rylee Huff with 11, and Jaci Kurkowski and Miah Long both adding five points a piece.

The girls continued to work on their game and fought through the season to improve. “There were several opportunities where if the ball had bounced the other way, we might have come out on top,” Steffen said.

With the resignation of Coach Steffen, the Lady Plainsmen will begin their next season during the 2018-19 school year with a new coach, and without five seniors that made up the team of 10.

“I will miss the girls next year and I am proud of their improvement and overall dedication this season. I know they will be successful in whatever they do in the future,” Steffen said.
